Functionality of a Blog

A blog in essence is a Web site, predominately created and maintained by an individual. The creator of the blog places regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video, which others can comment on and create a discussion. Blogging can be utilised in many forms depending on the author and audience. It is up to the creator of the blog as to what purpose it holds. Many blogs present commentary or news on a particular subject, while others are more personal such as a journal or online diary.

Learning Context

This is the first blog I have ever undertaken. Previously I viewed blogging as something I was far interested in. Whilst creating my blog I have been amazed at the versatility of blogging and its various uses. As an aspiring teacher I can see how blogging would further my learners in the education context. Personal writing tasks such as daily diary writing could be extended by blogging. Students would be able to share and comment on each other’s personal entries. The use of blogging would enable the students to possess greater ownership and autonomy in their learning as a shared experience.

Blogging would also support reflection upon the classroom learning. Students in their own time and pace would be able to contribute and reflect upon discussions, enabling students who do not feel so comfortable speaking in front of the class. I now conceptualise blogging as a positive teaching tool, which allows and incorporates the various and diverse learning styles within the classroom.
