‘A picture is worth a thousand words.’

Last year at my prac school I utilised images for one of my lessons. I created a PowerPoint slide of photos, the student’s task was to speculate if this photo were a story, what would the story be about? The students were highly engaged and enjoyed the learning experience.



Classroom application

The photo above could be used to spur student’s ideas about how others live, their roles and diverse cultures. Students could speculate what the man is doing and why. A contrast of other cultural photos could be used for a comparison. Images can also assist early readers and students in need of extra support when reading. Placing words and images together can help support students reading skills, catering for the diverse learning styles and skill levels.
